Program Notes
This work was written for Christian Alvord, a phenomenal bassoon player with an entertaining personality to match the uniqueness of the instrument. The Twin Siblings is a bassoon concertino that depicts two siblings with contrasting personalities. One is calm and reserved, being the one who behaves, while the other is more joyful and mischievous, being the one who misbehaves. The piece begins with a cadenza that highlights the range and tone of the bassoon, before moving to separate sections characterized by the two personalities. The bassoon demonstrates the instrument's capabilities throughout the composition with lyrical passages and articulate phrases. Concluding the piece combines both personalities, the music being suspiciously quiet with a hint of something brewing in the end.
